The Big Other Looms

Many thanks to everyone who came along and contributed to our events in October! Thanks to all those who came to the candle-lit book club, with a very special thanks to Dee Vora and Penelope Kupfer for facilitating.

On Friday, 9 November Silvia Bombardini and Elliot Mason will be facilitating the third in a series of book clubs on Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher, continuing with chapters 6-7 (pages 43-65) on bureaucracy, dreams and memory.

Many thanks to everyone who came along and contributed to our quarterly meeting. We have a new volunteer coordinator for the book club! The group will reconvene at 6:30pm on 11 January 2019 to set a new course and syllabus. Please add the date to your diaries and come along with your suggestions and reading proposals.

Also in January 2019 we will have the first meeting of the research and reading group on radical pedagogy, alternative art education and self-organisation. The broader aim of this group is to create a forum for the discussion of alternative art education, with the practical aim of creating a syllabus for an alternative studio programme. The first meeting will take place at 6:30pm on 25 January 2019 to determine the syllabus and structure of the reading group. Please come along and bring your proposals, suggestions, ideas and questions.

More details on these events will be published in December. The date of the next quarterly meeting has provisionally been set for 6:30pm on 22 Feb 2019 at Larc.

The Critical Theory in Contemporary Art Practice Bursary is a fee-waiver awarded to one applicant who will benefit most from participating in the course, regardless of previous experience, background or education.

Every application will be judged on its own terms, there are no academic or professional entry requirements. Applications are open to anyone over the age of 18. Please note that the bursary covers the course fees only and has no provision for additional financial support.

The course runs from 8 October to 3 December 2018, on Monday evenings for 9 weeks at Deptford Lounge 9 Giffin Street, London SE8 4RJ, with off-site visits on Saturday, 27 October 2018. Please download and read the course outline, it will help you decide whether this course is for you. 

For more information and to apply, please download the application form and return it by Monday, 3 September 2018. You will be notified of the outcome by 10 September 2018 and if you are selected you must accept the offer by 14 September 2018.

ART&CRITIQUE is a London-based alternative art education network dedicated to practice, research, education and critical engagement with contemporary art. We foster alternative models of art education and bring artists, curators, researchers, writers and organisations together in a series of open-access public events and courses.

ART&CRITIQUE is independent, self-organised and self-funded. We employ collaborative, co-operative and collective models of pedagogy and organisation. Our website provides information on or regular events, workshops and courses, and information on opportunities and upcoming deadlines, education, professional development, support and resources for artists, curators, students and anyone interested in art practice, critical theory and research.

We endeavour to offer affordable rates for everyone when we host our own courses. We offer one bursary award per self-hosted course and each Bursary is associated with a specific course. Congratulations to Lucy Webster for earning the fee-waiver award. Lucy is a multidisciplinary designer who explores themes of cultural critique, sociology, patriarchy and semiotics in a range of media including performance, film, fiction, poetry and sculpture.

UPDATE: Critical Theory in Practice (proposal for a collectively organised course)

In discussions following the recent Fee-waiver Award, the idea emerged to organise a course based on a labour exchange. The course will be organised collectively, giving the opportunity to those who cannot afford the fees to participate. It is also an opportunity for those who are interested in working together to develop an alternative model of free and sustainable education. Depending on how this goes, it will initially replace the Fee-waiver Award with a more equitable and inclusive alternative. We’re very pleased to invite applications for a fee-waiver award for the upcoming course Critical Theory in Contemporary Art Practice. The award is open to anyone over the age of 18. We got the autumn season off to a great start last weekend! Thanks to Anca Baciu and Mandy Wong for curating, and to everyone who came along on the art crawl from Marylebone to South Kensington on Saturday. We started off with Allora & Calzadilla at the Lisson Gallery, where we wondered how the exhibition lives up to the political critique in the press release. Looking at Wade Guyton‘s work at the Serpentine, we wondered how the large-scale digital prints on stretched canvas or digital prints arranged in display cases are “pioneering painting techniques that explore the impact of digital technologies”. We more or less came to the conclusion that this could be justified by referencing the work’s engagement with formalist concerns such as flatness, surface, illusion etc. We got utterly exhausted by the V&A LGBTQ Tour, which was delivered with energy and enthusiasm. We unanimously applauded this excellent initiative, but were disappointed at the emphasis on anecdotal stories about celebrities.

Many thanks to School of the Damned for inviting is to the First Alternative Education Open Day! It was a privilege to be part of this excellent landmark event together with other alternative art schools. We covered a lot of ground in a relentless series of workshops, met new people, exchanged ideas, played games and had a great time. Many thanks to Maria Christoforatou for preparing and facilitating our workshop, we collected participant responses and we’re putting those together to share. Autumn Rituals

After a packed season of events and shared activities with alternative art schools we enjoyed the summer alright! Read the bulletin on our adventures and find out about some of the places and faces of the alternative art education movement.

Now we’re looking forward to autumn rituals, open days, book fairs, art affairs, bonfires and getting together with warm cups of tea to exchange ideas, make decisions and change the future of art education.

On Saturday, 30 September we’re joining Mandy Wong and Anca Baciu for a crawl from Marylebone to South Kensington. We’re looking forward to some interesting discussions when we visit exhibitions by Allora & Calzadilla at Lisson, Wade Guyton at the Serpentine, and wrap up with the V&A LGBTQ Tour.

July was a busy month, we had several meetings and got together with alternative art schools to ignite a discussion on cooperation and exchange ideas on the future of education in the arts.

On Friday, 14 July we got together for an open meeting and workshop on self-organisation. We shared ideas and decided to follow-up with a series of workshops to address new questions that came up, to consider the part that self-organisation plays in alternative art education, and to address our own cooperative practices.

On Monday, 17 July it was great to catch up with members of AltMFA and  to hear all about their future plans at Louise Ashcroft’s exhibition All My Lives at Arebyte Laser.

On Sunday, 23 July we headed to Southend where were greeted by Tricia North and Michaela Bannon, two members of the first cohort of The Other MA (TOMA), a 12-month alternative art education model based at Metal Art School.  Hot on their heels was Emma Edmondson, founder and coordinator of TOMA, and we set off for an absolutely epic tour from Southend-on-Sea to Leigh-on-Sea.

Our first stop was the Railway Hotel, where we were joined by Simon Cole down from London on a different route. After catching up over vegan lunch and a drink we headed towards the seafront for a sneak preview of Twenty One, a brand new venue in Southend. We caught the installation of 100% Southend, an open access exhibition for the launch of the new space. We circled back through town to Focal Point Gallery to see the group exhibition Maximum Overdrive and Big Screen Southend, an open access rolling submission public screen. We passed the ostentatious University of Essex student accommodation building, the monumental VAT building, the Beecroft Art Gallery and enormous developments on the way to the Old Waterworks, an independent, artist-led space. We saw the artists’ studios, darkroom, printmaking facilities and Alison Lloyd’s exhibition Act 1 – 1 Act – Walking the Gallery, Closed – Walking Birchen Hat at Winch Gallery.

Then we headed through streets of terraced houses to West Road Tap for a drink and chat about alternative art education and coops. We set off along London Road to Chalkwell Park, home of TOMA and Metal Art School. Emma gave us a tour of the studio spaces, the exhibition and meeting spaces, the cosy living quarters and work spaces with excellent views of the Thames estuary. After bidding farewell to Metal and the beautiful park we got caught in a downpour which let up as soon as we got to Chalkwell station. The sun and tide were both out by the time we arrived Leigh-on-Sea where TOMA artist Richard Baxter’s studio is located. Richard told us about the boat-building history of the studio, he showed us his work and we talked about reading groups, practice, theory and choices in alternative art education.

Still somewhat damp from the storm we piled into the Mayflower to recount the the day over calamari and beer. We eventually had to run for the train back to London because we got carried away with the view of the moody estuary. For more images please see the album on our Facebook page. On Monday, 24 July we had a special edition of the book club at School of The Damned‘s (SOTD) Common Room, a week-long public programme of free educational workshops, talks and participatory events at Guest Projects, 22-29 July 2017.

SOTD is an alternative contemporary art postgraduate course based in the UK. The school runs a labour exchange economy based, offering a series of skills hour-for-hour in return for guests’ time, venues workshop provision, etc.

For the book club, Renata Minoldo prepared and chaired a discussion on Pedagogical Projects: How do you bring a classroom to life as if it were a work of art? An essay from Claire Bishop’s 2012 book Artifical Hells on pedagogical participatory art projects.

The discussion was entirely unrestrained, we meandered beyond territories relevant to the text in several interesting directions, focusing mainly on pedagogical practice and ethics. We might benefit from a return to the text or a closer look at concepts such as Foucault’s notion of parrhesia (the obligation to speak openly), Adorno’s concept of autonomy and Guattari’s ethico-aesthetic paradigm and transversality in the context of art and education.

We were excited to meet several members of the SOTD class of 2018, aka Year of the Rooster before the book club, and to talk about their work. Sean Roy Parker ran a Wildflower and Floristry walk on the previous day and was busy  reconfiguring his collection of found objects  into new ensembles. We were sorry to miss the discussion on Self-organisation, Access and Sharing on the previous day and we heard all about the fascinating workshop Thinking with Water: Pooling resources, research and ideas with Emily Wooley.

We viewed the beautiful display of work  from Renata’s Freehand Embroidery Technique workshop from the previous day. Renata combines costume design, visual art and art education in her practice, she is interested in pedagogy, communities, education, interdisciplinarity and participatory art, both as member of SOTD’s class of 2018 and in the context of her art practice. She has compiled the School of the Damned Open Library, which focuses primarily on alternative art education.

Thanks to SOTD, Renata Minoldo and everyone who joined this riveting discussion on art, participation and pedagogy. It was a pleasure to be part of this exciting programme of events and to enjoy the positive energy of this friendly, cooperative and creative environment. The fallen fruit crumble was delicious.

Alternative art education & co-operation

On Friday, 12 May 2017 we have an [OPENMEETING] to lay the foundations of a new alternative art school, coordinate future projects and institute collective ways of working at [ART&CRITIQUE]. If you’d like to get involved you’re welcome to join us!

The [BOOKCLUB] is back on Friday, 9 June 2017 at at Tropics Café in Elephant & Castle with The Dismeasure of Art, an interview with Paolo Virno (2009). This discussion will be chaired by Rubén Salgado Perez.

On Saturday, 10 June 2017, join us for an all day [STUDIOCRIT] at Thames-Side Studios in Woolwich to discuss the work of conceptual artist Rachel Ara and cross-disciplinary artist & curator Laura Hudson.

Our trip to Documenta 14 in late June has been postponed till September due to various setbacks. Please get in touch if you’d like to come along or help co-ordinate the trip.

• How do we want to proceed with the research project?

Some of the directions we could take as discussed at the meeting:

• Do we want to carry out the research formally or informally (and what is the difference)?
• Do we want to start by addressing our own experiences with self-organsation?
• Do we want to have a workshop on data protection with Radical Librarians Collective?
• Do we want to have a workshop on interviewing techniques and to draw up the questions that we want to ask?
• How do we prioritise these?

Symposium Discussion List / Loomio The symposium discussion list, as its name suggests, was originally intended for discussions and coordination of the symposium book club but we started using it to coordinate the other events and A&C as whole. It’s time to have a discussion about sorting this out because the list has grown mainly from people coming to the book club and it would be good to restore it to its original function. We’ve been abusing the list for a while and we need to address this by shifting the coordination of A&C to a different channel. Shall we create a new mailing list? Or should we shift coordination to Loomio? Loomio functions like an email list anyway if people turn on notifications, and everyone can post a comment simply by responding to an email. An additional list will be a nuisance because we’re all struggling with too many emails and we often have to notify people that there are open threads or votes on Loomio via email, when Loomio has the built-in function anyway. It’s important to be open and transparent in our communications and practices, but perhaps we need to create a separate list for regular contributors or those who will participate in the research project so that we can share sensitive information and coordinate the project? Or could we just use Loomio and create another list for this purpose?

Studio Programme Start drawing up some outlines for this and to locate which areas we need to look into and this will further inform our research.

Openki Workshop Are we interested in taking this forward?

Skill-Sharing Workshop We decided to have a skill-sharing workshop, the relevant Loomio thread has not generated a discussion so it would be great to discuss this in the meeting.

Membership At the last meeting we discussed the idea that people do not appreciate or value what is free and we reconsidered membership. This is something we should discuss in tandem with our collective model. Would everyone pay membership fees? Or just those who do not undertake any jobs? What happens if someone take a break for a few months? How much would we charge? How would we collect the fees? How would we distribute the income among those who carry out the labour?

Decision-Making We need to review our decision-making policy and update it.

Event Structure, Preparation and Communication Perhaps we need to think about the way we prepare and follow up the events, some areas that might need attention include the following:

  • Update the event infosheets to stress the collaborative preparation process. Perhaps the coordinator of each event should be responsible for updating the infosheet as they deem necessary through experience?
  • Establish a postmortem between each event coordinator and the chairperson/curator/artist from the previous event to discuss what went well and what did not and update our procedures accordingly.
  • Add a section to the website about our collaborative learning methods and our approach more broadly. The research that we’ve started is intended as preliminary work for this (both in terms of sharing ideas and in terms of learning new ideas). Perhaps we need to approach the research and devise our research questions with this practical goal in mind, at least in the short term?

There are two main agenda items for this meeting, both will focus on self-organsiation and our intention to develop collaborative, cooperative and collective practices as part of our pedagogical remit.

In the first part of the meeting we will discuss our proposed research at LARC with a view to submit a proposal in early August 2017. The research is intended to help us learn from the organisational practices of the usergroups at LARC as well as the organisation as  whole. This is also an opportunity to discuss our broader research project on alternative art education, radical pedagogy and self-organisation. For an overview of this project please see our recent unsuccessful research proposal for a residency at MayDay Rooms. We will outline our research objectives, identify actions, distribute roles and compile a schedule.

In the second part of the meeting we will discuss our ongoing plan to distribute and rotate the work that sustains [ART&CRITIQUE]. We will discuss the jobs, guides and handover procedures. After a one-month handover process and one month to practice our jobs do we feel that have learned anything? Have we had enough experience to handover the job to someone else? Have we identified problems or ways of making improvements? Should we extend the rota period to 4 months with 1-month handover at either end? Do we need more training? What skills do we need training in? Should we organise a skill-sharing workshop?

MEETING AGENDA

1. Report on [ART&CRITIQUE] participation, accounts and current productive tasks.

2. Distribution of tasks that keep [ART&CRITIQUE] running as a collective project. Co-ordination of roles and hand-overs. If there are not enough people to undertake the tasks we will consider adopting a different structure (e.g. yearly membership) so that we can pay people to undertake the tasks.

3. Future [ART&CRITIQUE] projects: book club, art crawl, studio crit and new projects or one-off events and workshops.

4. Discuss plans for an alternative art school running a yearly programme beginning in September 2018. How would this work and how would the participants be recruited? Should we have an application form/procedure or should participants be invited? An open call is more transparent but then we have the problem of selection criteria and having to turn people down. If we invite people we can all invite one person, which is more egalitarian, but then the project risks becoming a clique. In terms of structure, the programme would be a peer support group, meeting 1-2 times per week. To begin, we could incorporate the three irregular [ART&CRITIQUE] events (exactly as they currently run, open to the public etc.) and add seminars, lectures and/or workshops with guest tutors/practitioners, organised by and for participants on the programme, who will be responsible for developing the format of the programme and running it over time. We need to discuss funding (to pay guest tutors and cover  expenses) and find a regular reliable and free venue if The Field doesn’t open again. Come with ideas for a name!

5. Plan to secure an empty building by negotiating a lease with the owners in exchange for maintaining the building. This would offer us a space from which to run all these projects, have exhibitions, run a cafe, workshops, courses, screenings and all manner of events for all ages to make an income to pay people and cover our expenses.

6. Start a workers’ co-op and create a transparent co-operative structure for all the above and any other projects that may develop over time, including an alternative art education network website to host organisations that offer alternative art education in the UK.

Course Description

Prepare to be guided by your tutor through the practical and logistical processes involved in staging an exhibition on this one-day course. The course starts with the initial concept and research, moving to agreements and layout and finally, to the hanging of artworks. We will also advise you on insurance, public liability and health and safety requirements in public spaces. As well as developing your knowledge of innovative exhibition design, it’s a chance to exchange ideas with the rest of the group. Students are welcome to bring along ideas in relation to future exhibitions that they would like to or will be organising.

Course Outcomes

You will be capable of organising an exhibition from start to finish, as well as appreciating a successful exhibition design layout. You’ll be aware of the procedures between galleries and artists.

Artists, craftspeople or anyone eager to learn about the practical side of organising an exhibition.

Sophia Kosmaoglou is an artist, tutor, curator and founder of [ART&CRITIQUE], an alternative art education network based in London. Her current practice blurs the boundaries between art, activism and education to question the ontology of art and its social and institutional functions. She has a practice-based PhD in Fine Art from Goldsmiths and her research interests include institutional critique and the relationship between art and politics, institutions and independent organisations and collective practices. She has previously taught Critical Studies and Studio Practice on BA Fine Art Practice and Joint Honours courses at Goldsmiths and is currently a Visiting Tutor at Chelsea College of Arts. In the last ten years alternative art education has burgeoned into a full-blown movement, fuelled by economic crisis, austerity and the liberalisation of higher education. But what is alternative art education? Who is it for and what is it alternative to?

There are as many different formats and models of alternative art education as there are art schools, but in what ways is alternative art education expected to be different from traditional art education? Should alternative art schools try to emulate accredited MFAs or are they expected to radically re-imagine art education? How should alternative art schools be organised, structured and funded? Are alternative art schools expected to resist and reform institutional models of education and pedagogy? What would a cooperative art school look like?

We will address some of these questions, exchange ideas and discuss the future of alternative art education in a participatory workshop. Come along and bring your own questions.

This workshop is part of the UK Commons Assembly organised in the context of The School for Civic Action in collaboration with Commons Rising, an open platform for commons initiatives to come together, exchange knowledge and to see if there is an appetite for an ongoing UK Commons Assembly.

In a contemporary context of much inequality, the Commons discourse introduces models of sharing. The Commons are about the assets that belong to everyone, forming resources that should benefit all, rather than being enclosed to just a few.

The aim of the day is to put on an exhibition showing the wealth of Commons projects happening in the UK. There will be discussions as well as workshops to inform the public about the commons. It is also an opportunity to vision how the commons might work beyond the individual projects and to set up practical outcomes going forwards.

THE FIRST 100% OFFICIAL UNOFFICIAL ART EDUCATION OPEN-DAY is an informal open day exploring the plural experiences of alternative art schools and wider conversations of alternative education all together. An opportunity to get to know existing alternative art schools but also teach you how to DIY or DIT (Do It Together).

School of The Damned will use this day as the launch for inviting applications for 2018/19. Alongside this, alternative art schools or courses will showcase how they are unique through workshops presenting their individual identity; AltMFA, [ART&CRITIQUE], PACTO, School of the Damned, Syllabus, TOMA, Turps Banana.

Should alternative art schools participate in political struggles of resistance against war, social injustice and climate change? What are the objectives of alternative art education?

Together we will address some of these questions, exchange ideas and discuss the future of alternative art education in a participatory workshop. Come along and bring your own questions and ideas to the discussion.

AltMFA is a recipe that we make up together, inventing as we go, using whatever ingredients we can get hold of – a cocktail of the personalities, passions and histories of whoever is at the meeting. Bring an ingredient to add to the strange salad we will be making together as we collectively transcribe the recipe for an alternative art school.

16:00 Syllabus: Manifesto towards a Syllabus

Wysing Arts Centre’s Assistant Curator John Bloomfield will be joined by members Tom Smith and Frederica Agbah from Syllabus II and III to discuss the manifestos that each year’s group have drawn up. Composed during the first retreat of each year the manifestos are used to shape the ideals of the group and to lay down ground rules for the year ahead.

Critiquing the Crit
A WORKSHOP WITH SOPHIE BARR

This three-hour workshop is designed to help you to get the most out of your group critique by taking ownership of your feedback. During the workshop you will consider the most important aspects of giving and receiving feedback/criticism and you will have the opportunity to design and test your own crit model for future use.

The aim of the workshop is to get us to think critically about how we give and receive feedback as well as creating a culture where it’s okay to try things out. What is a crit for? How do you feel when you receive feedback? We will start by sharing our experiences of giving and receiving feedback in the past. How comfortable have you felt sharing your thoughts with your peer group? How have your peers reacted to your comments? What do you think the role of the peer is in the crit? With these ideas in mind, we will devise our own crit models and test them in groups of 4-5 people. Please bring along a work in progress to participate in these micro-crits. We will wrap up by sharing our feedback and proposals for how we would like to conduct our crits in the future.

Sophie Barr is an artist and Lecturer in Cultural and Contextual Studies with a growing interest in alternative modes of art education. She is currently studying for a Doctorate in Fine Art at the University of East London and makes art in Wood Green, north London.
